Canine Classifications - The AKC Dog Groups

Bringing out desired traits in dogs by selective breeding has been done for many years and has led to the modern day breeds. For identification purposes, the American Kennel Club has divided the 157 breeds they recognize into seven different groups:

Sporting Group - These dogs make very good companions, are naturally alert and active. With instincts fine tuned for use in water, woods and field, many of these breeds are still used for hunting and retrieving. This group includes pointers, retrievers, setters and spaniels. Dogs in this group need regular, vigorous exercise. Some breeds are : Cocker Spaniel, German Shorthaired Pointer, Labrador Retriever, Irish Setter.

Hound Group - Most of the dogs are instinctive hunters. Some have extremely acute senses of smell, others are amazing athletes with stamina to run down their quarry, and others are known for their tenacity. This group has a great size range of breeds, from the Irish Wolfhound to the Dachshund. Many of the dogs share the ability of baying. A pack of coon hounds baying on the trail of a raccoon can make quite a racket. So can a lone beagle. This ability to raise a ruckus should be taken into consideration by prospective owners. Some breeds in this group are: Beagle, Bassett Hound, Bloodhound, Foxhound, Greyhound, Coonhound, Afghanhound.

Working Group - These dogs were bred for pulling sleds, guarding property and water rescue work. Included in this group are some of the strongest and most intelligent dog breeds, so if they are to be kept as family pets they need to be properly trained. Having said that, they can also be loyal companions. Some breeds in this group are: St. Bernard, Rottweiller, Mastiff, Great Dane, Boxer, Doberman Pinscher, Siberian Husky.

Terrier Group - Most breeds within this group are known for their distinctive personalities. They can sometimes have little tolerance for dogs and animals. They were bred to hunt and kill vermin, thus their strong-willed (some would say stubborn) nature is come by honestly. They can make very energetic, engaging pets but their owners need to be strong willed and stay in charge. Some breeds in the group are: Airedale, Bull Terrier, Irish Terrier, Schnauzer.

Toy Group - Bred for their small size, these breeds are good for people with little living space. Don't let their size fool you. Some dogs can be feisty and protective, big dogs in little bodies. They prove the old adage, 'It isn't the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the dog.' But that doesn't mean they can't be loving companion dogs. Some breeds in the group are: Maltese, Chihuahua, Papillion, Pomeranian, Pekinese, Poodle, Shih Tzu, Yorkshire Terrier.

Non-Sporting Group -Just a short sampling of the breeds within this group show the diversity in size, color, coat and temperament: Bichon Frise, Chow Chow, Bulldog, Dalmatian, Lhasa Apso.

Herding Group - Not an AKC classification until 1983. Breeds in this group were originally in the Working Group. From a Corgi only a foot tall at the shoulder to a large Old English Sheepdog, the breeds have the amazing ability of controlling the movement of other animals. These dogs are still used in many places around the world for herding various types of animals, but they are also popular as family pets. Even as pets, the strong herding instinct can cause these animals to herd their owners and especially children in the family. The breeds are very intelligent, and thrive on training and exercise. Some breeds in this group are: Border Collie, Collie, Australian Cattle Dog, German Shepherd, Welsh Corgi.
