Dogs And Cats - Some Basic Differences

* Dogs are group or pack animals. It is important for a dog to know who the leader of the pack is. They are social animals and are happiest within that kind of environment. Cats are not pack animals. Except for the lion, cats in the wild are solitary creatures.

* Despite their behavior, most dogs are not territorial creatures. Dogs are attached to their group, their pack. The behavior some dogs show is more of a protection of their group than territory. Cats on the other hand are territorial. They are attached to their environment more so than dogs. As long as a dog can be with the leader of its pack, it is happy no matter the locale. Take a cat out of its environment, and you've got one unhappy cat no matter who else is with it.

* The dietary needs of dogs and cats are very different. Dogs are omnivores, which means they will eat most anything. They do need a certain amount of protein for good health, but a dog can also eat other things besides meat and still survive. A cat on the other hand is a carnivore, or meat-eater. Everything a cat needs for good health is found in the meat protein it eats. Cats cannot maintain good health by eating anything else but meat protein.

* Dogs can utilize any fat reserves in their bodies and live for a time without eating at all. Cats cannot utilize fat reserves. If a cat doesn't eat regularly, their bodies start breaking down non-fatty body tissues for energy. This happens even with a cat that is overweight and has fat reserves. For this reason, putting a fat cat on a diet needs to be done with great caution.

* When a dog rolls over on its back and offers its belly, it is a sign of submission. When a cat does the same, it is a sign of trust. A cat is never submissive!

* Many dogs love to roll in nasty, smelly things. This is a left over from their wild ancestors that did the same thing to mask their scent from predators. A cat on the other hand buries its wastes so that possible predators won't be able to smell their presence. These are very different behaviors that are used for the same reason, survival.

These are but a few of the differences between dogs and cats. But along with all the differences are some commonalities, one of them being that studies have shown that people who keep these animals for pets have longer lives and less stress.
